Rahu Mahadasha: The 18 Years Explained, Antardasha by Antardasha
Rahu has no body, no sign of its own and no light, yet it holds the third-longest period in the Vimshottari cycle. Tradition reads those eighteen years through borrowed qualities: the sign Rahu sits in, the planet that rules that sign, and the house it falls in. That is why the same period can look like a rise in one chart and a restless search in another.

Rahu mahadasha is the eighteen-year period that the Vimshottari dasha system gives to Rahu, the north lunar node. It has a reputation for ambition, foreign connections, sudden turns and a hunger that is hard to satisfy, and a second reputation, mostly online, as something to be afraid of. The first is how astrologers in the Parashari tradition have long described Rahu's themes. The second does not hold up once you see how the period is actually read.
Classical texts treat Rahu as a shadow planet (chhaya graha). It has no sign of its own, so in its dasha it is said to give results through the sign it occupies, the lord of that sign, the house it sits in and the planets it joins. This guide shows how the period is built, the nine antardashas with their computed lengths, a labelled sample chart, where the 2026 to 2028 Rahu transit fits in, and what the period does not mean. Your own dates are in the dasha section of Astroliya's free kundli.
What Rahu mahadasha is: 18 years in the Vimshottari cycle
Vimshottari dasha divides a 120-year cycle among nine grahas in a fixed order: Ketu (7 years), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19) and Mercury (17). Rahu's 18 years are the third-longest share, after Venus and Saturn. Its period always follows Mars and always hands over to Jupiter.
When you meet Rahu's period depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth, because that decides where in the sequence your life begins. One person may enter Rahu's period at six, another at forty, and someone born early in Jupiter's period would reach Rahu only after the rest of Jupiter's sixteen years and seven more periods, close to a hundred years in all, which in practice means never. A table that says "Rahu mahadasha comes at age X" cannot be right for everyone.
Who is born in Rahu mahadasha
Rahu rules three nakshatras: Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha. If your Moon was in one of them at birth, your life began in Rahu's period. How much of it remained depends on how far the Moon had already travelled through that nakshatra; the unused fraction of the 18 years is the balance at birth.
Illustration (fictional): a child is born with the Moon a quarter of the way through Swati. Three-quarters of Rahu's 18 years remain, which is 13.5 years. Rahu's period ends at about thirteen and a half, and Jupiter's sixteen years begin.
Everyone else reaches Rahu later in life, if at all. To find your dates:
- Make your free kundli with your date, exact time and place of birth.
- Go to the dasha section. Its timeline lists your mahadashas in order with their start and end dates.
- If Rahu's mahadasha is running now, open "All antardashas" to see the nine sub-periods with their dates and the one you are in.
- If Rahu's period is still ahead, note its start date and add the "Starts after" column of the table below to estimate each antardasha.
An accurate birth time matters. The Moon crosses roughly one nakshatra a day, so a wrong hour can shift every dasha date by months.
The nine antardashas of Rahu mahadasha and their lengths
Each mahadasha divides into nine antardashas (sub-periods) in the same Vimshottari order, beginning with the mahadasha lord itself. A sub-period's length is 18 times that planet's years, divided by 120. The table uses the traditional count of twelve 30-day months, so software that counts calendar days will differ by a few days from a hand count. That is normal.
| Antardasha | Formula | Length | Starts after | Traditional themes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rahu-Rahu | 18 x 18 / 120 | 2y 8m 12d | 0 | Rahu's matters at full strength: new ambitions, restlessness, unfamiliar people and places |
| Rahu-Jupiter | 18 x 16 / 120 | 2y 4m 24d | 2y 8m 12d | Teachers, children, counsel and ethics; often read as Jupiter steadying Rahu's appetite |
| Rahu-Saturn | 18 x 19 / 120 | 2y 10m 6d | 5y 1m 6d | Work, duty, long effort and structure; Rahu is said to act like Saturn, so the two are read as compatible |
| Rahu-Mercury | 18 x 17 / 120 | 2y 6m 18d | 7y 11m 12d | Trade, technology, study, communication and clever strategy; Mercury and Rahu are often treated as friends |
| Rahu-Ketu | 18 x 7 / 120 | 1y 0m 18d | 10y 6m 0d | The two ends of the nodal axis together: confusion or detachment, sudden endings, inward questions |
| Rahu-Venus | 18 x 20 / 120 | 3y 0m 0d | 11y 6m 18d | Relationships, comforts, art, luxury and money; traditionally one of the more pleasant stretches |
| Rahu-Sun | 18 x 6 / 120 | 0y 10m 24d | 14y 6m 18d | Authority, government, the father and reputation; Sun and Rahu are traditional enemies, so read for friction with superiors |
| Rahu-Moon | 18 x 10 / 120 | 1y 6m 0d | 15y 5m 12d | Mind, mother, home and moods; also enemies, often read as an anxious or unsettled time |
| Rahu-Mars | 18 x 7 / 120 | 1y 0m 18d | 16y 11m 12d | Energy, property, siblings, risk and quarrels; a time tradition advises for patience over haste |
The lengths add to exactly 18 years. Each antardasha can be divided again into pratyantardashas by the same rule, which is how astrologers narrow a reading to months.
The themes column is a vocabulary, not a forecast. An antardasha is traditionally read through both planets: what the sub-period lord rules and where it sits in your chart matter as much as its general nature. Venus ruling your lagna and well placed makes Rahu-Venus a very different chapter from Venus ruling your 6th and weakened.
Rahu mahadasha effects: why Rahu acts through its sign lord and house
Because Rahu owns no sign, classical texts describe its period through what it borrows. Astrologers traditionally read four things, roughly in this order.
- The house Rahu occupies. Rahu is said to magnify and unsettle the matters of its house: career in the 10th, gains and networks in the 11th, partnerships in the 7th, travel and expenses in the 12th, sudden events and hidden matters in the 8th.
- The sign lord (dispositor). The planet ruling Rahu's sign carries much of the result. Rahu in Taurus works partly through Venus; Rahu in Capricorn partly through Saturn. Where that lord sits and how strong it is decides whether Rahu's push lands well.
- Conjunctions and aspects. A planet sitting with Rahu colours its period strongly. Rahu with Jupiter, with the Sun or with the Moon are each read differently, and the last two link Rahu's period with the old story of eclipses.
- Kendra and trikona links. A widely quoted classical rule says that Rahu in a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) linked with a trikona lord, or in a trikona (1, 5, 9) linked with a kendra lord, can give results like a raja yoga in its period.
Texts disagree on Rahu's dignity. Some place its exaltation in Taurus and others in Gemini, with debilitation opposite. Many astrologers give the dispositor and house more weight than this contested dignity, which is one reason readings of Rahu vary so much between practitioners.
Why Rahu is linked with ambition, foreign links and sudden change
In the tradition, Rahu is the head of the demon Svarbhanu, who drank the nectar of immortality and was cut in two. The head that kept the taste but has no body to be satisfied is the image behind Rahu's themes: craving, reaching beyond one's station, and things outside the familiar. That is why astrologers associate Rahu with foreign lands and people, new technology, unconventional careers, sudden rises and sudden reversals. These are symbols the tradition attaches to Rahu, not events the period produces by itself.
A labelled sample chart
Illustration (fictional charts): two people, both entering Rahu mahadasha, read the way an astrologer traditionally would.
| Factor | Chart A (illustration) | Chart B (illustration) |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Leo | Cancer |
| Rahu's house and sign | 10th house, Taurus | 8th house, Aquarius |
| Rahu's sign lord | Venus, in Gemini in the 11th | Saturn, in Aries in the 10th (debilitated) |
| Ketu | 4th house, Scorpio | 2nd house, Leo |
| How it is traditionally read | Strong career ambition, visibility, gains through networks and perhaps work with foreign clients; home life may feel neglected | Sudden changes, interest in research or hidden matters, career pressure through the sign lord; read as a time for caution with shortcuts and money |
Neither chart is "good Rahu" or "bad Rahu". Chart B is traditionally read as asking more care, and even there Saturn's position, any cancellation of its debilitation and Jupiter's aspect would change the reading. The same eighteen years mean different things because the chart around Rahu is different.
Rahu mahadasha during Rahu's 2026 to 2028 transit
Rahu moves into Capricorn on 5 December 2026 and stays there until 24 June 2028, with Ketu opposite in Cancer (dates as published by PanchangBodh for Indian time; panchangs that use the true node rather than the mean node can differ by days or weeks). If your Rahu mahadasha is running during this stretch, astrologers traditionally look at two things together: the natal house your dasha lord occupies, and the house the transiting Rahu crosses from your lagna and Moon.
When transiting Rahu passes over natal Rahu, its own sign lord or your Moon, the overlap is read as Rahu's themes being sharper for a while. It does not mean double trouble, and it does not mean a fixed event. For the house each node crosses for all 12 Moon signs, see Rahu-Ketu transit 2026 to 2028. If your chart has all planets between Rahu and Ketu, the Kaal Sarp dosh guide explains how that pattern is checked and why many astrologers do not treat it as a classical dosha at all.
When it ends: the handover to Jupiter mahadasha
The last antardasha is Rahu-Mars, and then Jupiter's sixteen-year period begins with Jupiter-Jupiter. Tradition calls the meeting of two mahadashas a dasha sandhi and reads its last months as a transition, when the old period's matters wind up and the new one's begin to show.
The move from Rahu to Jupiter is often described as a change of direction: from wanting more towards wanting meaning, from experiment towards counsel, teaching and family. As always, Jupiter's own placement in your chart decides how that reads for you. Saturn's nineteen years follow Jupiter's, and our Shani mahadasha guide walks through that period the same way.
What Rahu mahadasha does not mean
- "Rahu mahadasha is always bad." Classical rules give Rahu strong results when its sign lord is well placed or when it links kendra and trikona lords. Many people associate it with their most ambitious years.
- "It brings illness, scandal or ruin." No period predicts a specific misfortune by itself. Astrologers read health, reputation and money from the relevant houses and their lords, not from the dasha name. Health concerns belong with a doctor.
- "Everything changes on day one." Effects are traditionally said to build through the sub-periods, and the antardasha lord often sets the tone more than the start date does.
- "It is the same as Kaal Sarp dosh or a Rahu transit." These are three different things: a dasha period, a chart pattern and a current transit. You can have any one without the others.
- "Everyone in Rahu's period must wear gomed (hessonite)." Traditionally a gemstone is prescribed only after a careful chart reading, and many astrologers advise against it where Rahu sits in a difficult house.
Rahu mahadasha remedies people traditionally follow
Remedies are a matter of faith and practice, and they are optional. None of them replaces medical, legal or financial advice, and none can promise an outcome. These are the practices tradition links with Rahu:
- Mantra. The Rahu beej mantra "Om Bhram Bhreem Bhroum Sah Rahave Namah", often repeated 108 times, commonly on Saturdays. The mantra tool has a mala counter for keeping count of 108.
- Durga worship. Prayers to Goddess Durga, such as the Durga Saptashati or a Durga mantra, are a widespread Rahu practice.
- Charity. Donating to people in need, especially those on the margins of society, is the classic offering tradition associates with Rahu.
- Clarity as a remedy. Many astrologers say the best Rahu remedy is the opposite of Rahu's excess: check facts before big moves, avoid shortcuts and speculation you cannot afford, and keep your word.
- Rudraksha. The 8 mukhi rudraksha is traditionally associated with Rahu and with Lord Ganesha; the store lists a natural 8 mukhi bead.

Questions people ask
How long is Rahu mahadasha?
Rahu's mahadasha lasts 18 years in the Vimshottari system. If you were born in it, only the balance left at your birth applies, which depends on how far the Moon had moved through Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha. The dasha section of your kundli shows your exact dates.
Which antardasha of Rahu mahadasha is considered best?
Rahu-Jupiter, Rahu-Venus and Rahu-Mercury are often read as the more comfortable stretches. In practice, the best sub-period is the one whose planet is strongest and rules good houses in your own chart. Rahu-Sun and Rahu-Moon are traditionally read as more demanding, but even they depend on the chart.
Does Rahu mahadasha bring foreign travel or settlement?
Rahu is traditionally linked with foreign lands, so astrologers look for travel or work abroad in its period, especially when Rahu touches the 9th, 12th or 7th house or their lords. It is a theme to look for, not a promise. Visas, jobs and family decisions still depend on everything outside the chart.
Is Rahu mahadasha bad for marriage?
Not by default. Tradition reads marriage from the 7th house, its lord and Venus, and Rahu's period colours that reading rather than replacing it. Rahu linked with the 7th is sometimes read as an unconventional or cross-cultural match, and Rahu-Venus is one of the antardashas often associated with relationships.
What happens after Rahu mahadasha ends?
Jupiter's mahadasha of 16 years begins, starting with Jupiter-Jupiter. Tradition often describes the change as a shift from ambition towards guidance, learning and family, with Jupiter's own placement in your chart deciding the detail.
