Pitra Dosh: What People Call Its Symptoms, How a Chart Shows It, and What Families Do
Has someone blamed a run of bad luck on your ancestors? In the tradition, pitra dosh is read from placements such as the Sun sharing a sign with Rahu or Ketu, which roughly one birth in six has, not from what has gone wrong in your life.

Pitra dosh (also written pitru dosha, or pitri dosha) is the name astrologers in the Parashari tradition give to a few chart combinations said to show a debt, or an unsettled bond, with one's ancestors. You will usually hear about it after a run of bad luck, often from someone who has already decided that the ancestors are the cause. That reverses the order the tradition works in. It starts from the chart, and a setback says nothing about where the Sun, Rahu and Ketu stood when you were born; Astroliya's free kundli shows you that directly.
What pitra dosh means in the tradition
The word pitra (or pitru) means the ancestors: parents, grandparents and the generations before them. Hindu tradition speaks of pitru rin, the debt each person owes to those who came before, repaid by remembering them, feeding others in their name and carrying the family's dharma forward. Shraddha and tarpan, the rites performed for the departed, are the classical way of honouring that debt.
Astrologers connected this idea to the chart through two symbols. The Sun is the natural significator of the father and of one's lineage. The 9th house is the house of dharma, fortune, teachers and, in most North Indian practice, the father and the ancestors. When these are joined by Rahu or Ketu, the shadow points that classical texts treat as disruptive, astrologers traditionally read a pitra dosh: a sign that the family line carries something unfinished, which the person is asked to honour rather than fear.
That last part matters. Read this way, pitra dosh is a call to remembrance, not a curse. The fear-heavy version, where every setback is blamed on angry ancestors, is the least careful reading of it.
How a chart shows pitra dosh: the combinations astrologers read
Different astrologers use different lists. Three combinations come up most often.
The Sun with Rahu or Ketu
The Sun in the same sign as Rahu, or in the same sign as Ketu. Some astrologers also call the Sun with Rahu a grahan (eclipse) yoga, because the nodes are the points where eclipses happen. Astroliya's Dosha check uses this rule, reading it by sign.
Rahu in the 9th house
Rahu placed in the 9th house, counted from the lagna (the rising sign). Astroliya's Dosha check uses this rule too, and it is the part that needs a birth time, as explained below.
An afflicted 9th lord
Some astrologers add a weak or troubled 9th lord: the planet that rules the sign on the 9th house, placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, combust, or sitting with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. This is judged differently from one astrologer to the next, so Astroliya's Dosha check does not compute it. Treat it as an interpretive layer, not a yes-or-no test.
| Combination | What it needs | Checked by Astroliya |
|---|---|---|
| Sun in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu | Date of birth (time only near a sign change) | Yes |
| Rahu in the 9th house from the lagna | Date, exact time and place of birth | Yes, when the birth time is known |
| Afflicted 9th lord | Full chart and the astrologer's judgement | No: tradition only |
Why the 9th-house part needs a birth time
The Sun stays in one sign for about a month, and Rahu and Ketu stay in a sign for about a year and a half. So whether the Sun shares a sign with a node depends almost entirely on the date. Only a birth on the day the Sun changes sign needs the time to settle it.
The 9th house is different. Houses are counted from the lagna, and the lagna changes sign roughly every two hours. Two people born on the same day, a few hours apart, can have Rahu in completely different houses.
An illustration, not anyone's chart: take a day when Rahu is in Capricorn. For a person whose lagna is Taurus, Capricorn is the 9th sign from Taurus, so Rahu is in the 9th house and the Pitra check is met. For a person born later that day with a Virgo lagna, Capricorn is the 5th sign from Virgo, so Rahu is in the 5th house and that part of the check is not met at all. Same date, same Rahu, different answer.
This is why a pitra dosh reading that starts from a date of birth alone is only half a reading. If you don't know your birth time, our guide to a kundli without birth time explains what can still be read and what can't, and the 9th-house check is firmly in the "can't" column.
How common these combinations are
This is the point the scary articles skip. Rahu and Ketu always sit in opposite signs, so the Sun passes through a sign holding one of them twice a year, for about a month each time. That means roughly one birth in six has the Sun sharing a sign with Rahu or Ketu. Rahu falls in the 9th house in about one chart in twelve.
A second illustration: Rahu moves into Capricorn from 5 December 2026 (the dates are in our Rahu-Ketu transit guide). The Sun traditionally enters sidereal Capricorn at Makar Sankranti in mid-January and stays about a month. So every child born in that month will have the Sun with Rahu. A whole month of babies, across a whole country, cannot all be carrying an ancestral burden in any meaningful personal sense. A combination this common is one strand of a chart, to be read with everything else, never a verdict on its own.
Pitra dosh symptoms: what the lists say, and what helps first
Search for pitra dosh symptoms and you will find long lists: illness in the family, debt, delayed marriage, difficulty having children, quarrels, property disputes, dreams of dead relatives. Every item on those lists happens in most families at some point, with or without any combination in anyone's chart. A list that fits everyone cannot tell you anything about you.
No astrologer can look at a hardship and work backwards to a dosha. The honest order is the other way round: deal with the problem through the people who can actually help, and if you want, read your chart alongside.
| What symptom lists blame on pitra dosh | What helps first |
|---|---|
| Repeated or long illness in the family | A doctor, and a second opinion if needed |
| Debt, losses or a business that keeps failing | A financial adviser or chartered accountant |
| Difficulty conceiving, or pregnancy loss | A gynaecologist or fertility specialist |
| Delayed marriage | Time, honest conversation, and patience with yourself |
| Quarrels and property disputes | Mediation, a family elder, or a lawyer |
| Dreams of a parent or grandparent who has died | Often grief, which is normal; talk to someone, or a counsellor |
Pitra dosh remedies families traditionally follow
The practices traditionally recommended for pitra dosh are the same ones Hindu families keep for their ancestors whether or not anyone has looked at a chart. That is worth knowing: none of them requires a diagnosis, and none needs to be expensive.
Shraddha and tarpan in Pitru Paksha
Pitru Paksha is the dark fortnight set aside for the ancestors. In 2027, Drik Panchang lists it from 16 to 29 September (New Delhi timings; check your city). Families traditionally perform shraddha on the tithi on which a parent or grandparent died, and the fortnight closes with Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the day kept for ancestors whose tithi is not known. Tarpan, the offering of water with black sesame and kusha grass, is made with their names. Our Pitru Paksha guide explains how the shraddha day is chosen, and the festival calendar lists the year's observances.
Feeding and charity
Feeding people in an ancestor's name is at the centre of shraddha. Families traditionally offer food to Brahmins or to anyone in need, and set aside portions for crows, cows and dogs. Many today give the same meal, or its cost, to a food bank, an old-age home or a school, which keeps the spirit of the practice.
Amavasya and everyday remembrance
Some families offer tarpan or a simple lamp on every Amavasya, the new-moon day. Others visit Gaya or another tirtha for pind daan once in a lifetime. And the simplest remembrance is also the oldest: speaking of the departed, keeping their good habits alive, looking after the elders who are still here.
- Start with what your own family already does; the tradition varies by community and region.
- Ask an elder or the family priest for the right tithi and the rites your family follows.
- Keep it within your means. Tradition values sincerity over spending.
- Treat any remedy as optional, and never as a reason to delay real-world help.
What pitra dosh does not mean
- It does not mean your ancestors are angry with you, or that you are being punished.
- It does not mean an illness, a loss or a delay was caused by the chart.
- It does not mean you must pay for an expensive puja. The classical remedies cost little.
- It does not mean the combination stands alone. Classical astrologers read the whole chart, its strengths and the running dasha, before saying anything about one placement. The same caution applies to Kaal Sarp dosh, another dosha built on Rahu and Ketu that is often made to sound worse than the texts do.
How to check pitra dosh in your own kundli
Make a free kundli on /kundli with your date, time and place of birth, then scroll to the Dosha check. Its Pitra line reports whether the Sun shares a sign with Rahu or Ketu, and whether Rahu is in your 9th house, and names the planets involved, so you can see the reasoning rather than take a label on trust. If your birth time is unknown, it checks only the Sun part and marks the 9th-house part as needing your birth time.
If you want the combination read in context, with your houses, your dasha and what the 9th house holds, you can ask Astroliya's AI astrologer in Hindi or English. It is an AI, and it gives guidance from your chart, not certainties.
Questions people ask
What are the symptoms of pitra dosh?
Popular lists name illness, debt, childlessness, delayed marriage and family quarrels. These happen in most families, so they cannot reveal a dosha; only the chart combinations can show one, and even then they don't explain why a particular thing happened. Health, money and legal problems need a doctor, adviser or lawyer first.
Can pitra dosh be seen from the date of birth alone?
Partly. Whether the Sun shares a sign with Rahu or Ketu can usually be read from the date. Rahu in the 9th house needs the exact birth time and place, because houses are counted from the lagna, which changes every couple of hours.
Is pitra dosh the same as pitru dosha?
Yes. Pitra dosh, pitru dosha and pitri dosha are spellings of the same term, from the Sanskrit word for the ancestors.
What is the main remedy for pitra dosh?
Tradition points to shraddha and tarpan during Pitru Paksha, feeding people in the ancestors' names, and remembrance on Amavasya. These are family practices, optional and inexpensive, and they are kept by many families who have never had their chart read.
Does pitra dosh ever go away?
A birth chart doesn't change, so the combination stays. What astrologers traditionally say changes is how much weight it carries, which depends on the rest of the chart and the dasha running at the time. Many people with the combination live ordinary, settled lives.
