Manglik Dosha: What It Is, When It Is Cancelled, and What It Does Not Mean

Few words in an Indian marriage conversation carry as much worry as "Manglik". Most of that worry comes from hearing the label without the rule behind it, or the exceptions the tradition itself lists.

Manglik dosha, also called mangal dosha or kuja dosha, is a condition astrologers traditionally read in a birth chart when Mars sits in certain houses. It comes up almost entirely in one setting: marriage matching. In the Parashari tradition, Mars is the planet of drive, heat and assertion, and a Mars placed in a house linked with the self, the family, home life, partnership, longevity or the bed is read as bringing that heat into married life.

That is the whole idea. It is a reading about temperament and friction, not a curse, and the same classical tradition that describes it also lists many conditions under which it is treated as cancelled. This guide covers the rule, the cancellations and the myths. If you want to check your own chart step by step, Am I Manglik? walks through it in five steps.

What Manglik dosha is, in one rule

A chart is called Manglik when Mars occupies one of six houses counted from a starting point. Astroliya's check uses this version:

  • Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the lagna (the ascendant).
  • Houses are whole signs: the lagna's sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on.
  • Mars in the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th or 11th is not Manglik under this rule.

Why these six houses? Astrologers traditionally explain it through what each house governs and what Mars looks at from there. Mars in the 1st colours the personality; in the 2nd, speech and family life; in the 4th, domestic peace; in the 7th, the partner directly; in the 8th, the shared life and its longevity; in the 12th, intimacy and expenses. Mars also has special aspects on the 4th and 8th houses from itself, which is why from several of these positions it falls on the 7th, the house of marriage.

Which houses, counted from where

Ask three astrologers whether a chart is Manglik and you can get three answers. Usually none of them is wrong; they are using different versions of the rule. Two choices make most of the difference.

Which houses count

The six-house list above is the one most often used. Some lists leave out the 2nd house and use only 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12. A chart with Mars in the 2nd is Manglik under one list and not under the other, so it is worth asking which list was used before worrying about a result.

Where you count from

Astroliya counts from the lagna. Many astrologers also count from two other points:

  • The Moon sign (Chandra lagna), because the Moon is read as the mind and is used as a second ascendant in Vedic astrology.
  • Venus, because Venus is the natural significator (karaka) of marriage and the spouse.

Astrologers who use all three often grade the result: Manglik from the lagna, the Moon and Venus together is read as stronger, and Manglik from only one of them as mild. A chart can easily be Manglik from the Moon but not from the lagna, which is the most common reason two calculators disagree.

Manglik dosha cancellation: the classical exceptions

This is the part most fear-driven readings leave out. Classical and later texts describe many conditions under which Manglik dosha is considered cancelled (dosha bhanga) or much weakened. Lists differ between texts and teachers, so read the ones below as conditions commonly cited in the tradition, not as a fixed checklist.

Mars in its own or exaltation sign

Mars owns Aries and Scorpio and is exalted in Capricorn. When Mars sits in one of these signs, it is traditionally read as dignified and well-behaved, and many astrologers treat the dosha as cancelled even in a Manglik house.

Both partners Manglik

When both charts are Manglik, tradition reads the two as balancing each other. This is one of the most often cited cancellations, and the reason families often look for a Manglik match.

Jupiter or Venus protecting the chart

Jupiter in the 1st or 7th house, or Jupiter aspecting Mars, is commonly cited as softening the dosha, because Jupiter is read as the great benefic. Venus strong in the 7th house is cited the same way. Mars conjoined with Jupiter or with the Moon is also listed by many astrologers as a cancelling combination.

Sign-specific exceptions

Some texts tie the exception to the exact house and sign. One widely quoted list:

Mars in houseTreated as cancelled when Mars is in
1stLeo or Aquarius
2ndGemini or Virgo
4thAries or Scorpio
7thCancer or Capricorn
8thSagittarius or Pisces
12thTaurus or Libra

Other versions of this table exist, which is exactly why cancellations need a careful reading of the whole chart.

Worked examples

These three charts are illustrations, not real people, chosen to show how the rule and the cancellations interact.

LagnaMars inHouseManglik by the rule?Traditional reading
LibraCapricorn4thYesMars exalted, so commonly read as cancelled
TaurusSagittarius8thYes8th in Sagittarius is in the sign-specific list, so commonly read as cancelled
SagittariusGemini7thYesNone of the sign-based exceptions above applies; the rest of the chart and the partner's chart decide how it is weighed

The first two show why "Manglik" on its own is an incomplete answer. The third is a chart where the dosha stands under these rules, and even there the reading is about matching temperaments, not about a bad outcome. An astrologer reading it traditionally would look next at Jupiter's aspects, the 7th lord, Venus, and the partner's Mars before saying anything about the marriage.

What Manglik dosha does not mean

The tradition describes a tendency to be weighed; popular retelling turned it into a threat. A few things the label does not mean:

  • It is not a curse and not a sign of bad character. It describes where one planet sits.
  • It does not predict harm to a spouse. Claims that a Manglik person's partner will fall ill or die are fear, not a reading. No chart placement on its own predicts anyone's lifespan.
  • It does not fix a delay in marriage. There is no rule that a Manglik person marries late by a set number of years. Marriage timing is read from dashas and transits, which When will I get married? explains.
  • It does not simply disappear at 28. You will often hear this as a popular belief. Mars's house in your birth chart does not change with age; some astrologers do say Mars matures with time, but that is an interpretation, not part of the rule.
  • It does not rule out a marriage. Whether one partner is Manglik is one factor among many, and many astrologers weigh it alongside both full charts.

One partner Manglik, or both

In matching, the Manglik question is about the two charts together. When both are Manglik, tradition reads them as balanced. When neither is, the question doesn't arise. When only one is, many astrologers look at Mars's sign, its aspects and the cancellations above in that chart before forming a view, and they set it beside the guna score from the eight kootas.

Kundli matching on /matching runs the Manglik check for both of you alongside guna milan, and says plainly which case you are in. How couples and families usually weigh the one-sided case is covered in Manglik and non-Manglik marriage.

Manglik dosha remedies people traditionally follow

Remedies are traditionally recommended for a Manglik chart whose dosha is not cancelled, and they are always optional. The ones most families know:

  • Reciting the Mangal (Mars) mantra or the Hanuman Chalisa, often on Tuesdays, the day associated with Mars.
  • Keeping a Tuesday fast, or visiting a Hanuman temple on Tuesdays.
  • Charity linked with Mars, such as giving red lentils (masoor dal) or helping someone in need.
  • In some families, a symbolic ceremony before the wedding, such as Kumbh vivah. This is a family choice, not a requirement.

Gemstones such as red coral are traditionally suggested only after the whole chart is read, never from the Manglik label alone. No remedy is a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice, and none is a condition for a good marriage.

Check your own chart

Make your chart on /kundli with your date, time and place of birth; the Dosha check shows whether Mars is in a Manglik house and which house it is. For the step-by-step count by hand, use Am I Manglik?. The same explainer is available in Hindi as मांगलिक दोष. If you have a question about your own placement, Astroliya's AI astrologer in chat reads from the same calculated chart and shows its reasoning.

Questions people ask

Is mangal dosha the same as manglik dosha?

Yes. Mangal is the Hindi name for Mars, and mangal dosha, manglik dosha and kuja dosha (from Kuja, another name for Mars) all describe the same condition. A person whose chart has it is called Manglik.

How do I know if my manglik dosha is cancelled?

You need the whole chart: Mars's sign, Jupiter's and Venus's positions and aspects, and ideally the partner's chart. Astroliya's free check shows only whether Mars is in a Manglik house; the Mangal Dosha report sets out the traditional cancellation rules that may apply to your chart.

Why is my chart Manglik on one site and not on another?

Usually because the sites count from different points (the lagna, the Moon or Venus), use different house lists, or use different house systems. Compare the method first. Astroliya counts from the lagna with whole-sign houses and the list 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12.

Can manglik dosha be checked without a birth time?

Only partly. The date usually gives Mars's sign and often the Moon's sign (the Moon changes sign every two to two and a half days, so a date near a change needs the time), so a Moon-based count is often possible, but the lagna-based check needs the time and place of birth. Astroliya shows "Needs birth time" rather than guessing.

Should a Manglik person marry only a Manglik?

Tradition reads two Manglik charts as balancing each other, but it also lists many cancellations and many astrologers weigh one-sided cases against the full charts. No single placement decides a marriage.
