Mulank and Bhagyank: How to Calculate Your Numbers From Your Date of Birth
Two numbers, both plain addition. Once you see the steps, you can check any calculator's answer by hand, and you'll know why two websites sometimes print different results for the same birthday.

Mulank and Bhagyank are the two numbers Indian numerology takes from your date of birth. Your Mulank (मूलांक, the root number) comes from the day of the month you were born. Your Bhagyank (भाग्यांक, often translated as the fortune or destiny number, and the same thing as the life path number) comes from the whole date. Neither needs a chart, a birth time or a place. This guide shows the arithmetic with labelled examples, using the same rules as Astroliya's numerology tool, so a number you work out by hand here should match the one the site gives you.
One thing to know before you start: numerology (ank jyotish, अंक ज्योतिष) is a tradition of its own. It borrows the nine grahas of Vedic astrology, but it does not use your lagna, your Moon sign or the planets' actual positions at your birth. A kundli reading and a numerology reading are two different readings of you, and neither is a proven science. Read both as ways of reflecting, not as verdicts.
How to calculate your Mulank from your birth day
The rule is short: take the day of the month you were born and add its digits until one digit is left. The month and year play no part.
- Write down your birth day, from 1 to 31.
- If it has two digits, add them.
- If the answer still has two digits, add them again.
Example A (an illustration): born on the 28th. 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Mulank 1.
Example B: born on the 11th. 1 + 1 = 2. Mulank 2. For the Mulank, 11 and 22 are always reduced to one digit; master numbers are kept only for the Bhagyank, below.
Because there are only 31 possible days, every Mulank can be read off one table.
| Mulank | Born on these days | Graha traditionally linked |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1, 10, 19, 28 | Sun (Surya) |
| 2 | 2, 11, 20, 29 | Moon (Chandra) |
| 3 | 3, 12, 21, 30 | Jupiter (Guru) |
| 4 | 4, 13, 22, 31 | Rahu |
| 5 | 5, 14, 23 | Mercury (Budh) |
| 6 | 6, 15, 24 | Venus (Shukra) |
| 7 | 7, 16, 25 | Ketu |
| 8 | 8, 17, 26 | Saturn (Shani) |
| 9 | 9, 18, 27 | Mars (Mangal) |
Use the date on your birth certificate. The Hindu calendar day (vaar) runs from sunrise to sunrise, so if you were born between midnight and dawn you may hear an argument for the previous day; the method here, like most numerology, uses the civil date as written.
How to calculate your Bhagyank from your full date of birth
For the Bhagyank, add every digit of your date of birth, written as day, month and four-digit year. Then reduce the total to one digit, with one exception: if you reach 11, 22 or 33 on the way, stop there. Those are the master numbers.
- Write your date as DD MM YYYY.
- Add all eight digits.
- Add the digits of the total, and repeat until you reach a single digit or 11, 22 or 33.
Example C (an illustration): 14 March 1998. The digits are 1, 4, 0, 3, 1, 9, 9, 8. 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 8 = 35, and 3 + 5 = 8. Bhagyank 8. This person's Mulank is 5, from the 14th (1 + 4).
Example D: 3 July 1990. 0 + 3 + 0 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 29, and 2 + 9 = 11. Stop: Bhagyank 11, a master number. Mulank 3.
Example E: 1 November 1990. 0 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 22. Bhagyank 22, a master number, reached at the first total. Mulank 1.
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33
Numerologists hold 11, 22 and 33 back because they treat them as heightened forms of 2, 4 and 6: the same root, read with more intensity and, traditionally, more pressure. If your Bhagyank is 11, your root number is still 2, and many readers will look at both. A master number is not a rank or a promise of anything special; it is just a total that this method chooses not to reduce.
Not every calculator keeps master numbers. Astroliya's vehicle number tool, for example, reduces your life path all the way to one digit before comparing it with a plate, so Example D would appear there as 2.
Why two calculators can give you different answers
Here is the reassuring part: however you group the digits, the single-digit answer cannot change. Adding digits never changes a number's remainder when you divide by 9, so every route ends on the same root. What can change is whether a master number shows up along the way.
Example F: 2 September 1998. Add every digit: 0 + 2 + 0 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 8 = 38, then 3 + 8 = 11, a master number. Some calculators reduce the day, month and year separately first: day 2, month 9, year 1 + 9 + 9 + 8 = 27 and 2 + 7 = 9, then 2 + 9 + 9 = 20 and 2 + 0 = 2. Same root (11 reduces to 2), different label.
So if a site gives you a different Bhagyank, check three things in order: was the date entered as day-month or month-day, does that site keep master numbers, and does it add all digits at once or reduce each part first?
Mulank and Bhagyank compared: what each one is read for
The two numbers come from the same date but are read for different things. A common way to put it is that the Mulank is how you meet the world day to day, and the Bhagyank is the longer road you walk.
| Mulank | Bhagyank | |
|---|---|---|
| Comes from | Your birth day only | Your full date of birth |
| Also called | Root number; psychic number in some books | Destiny number; life path number |
| Possible values | 1 to 9 | 1 to 9, or 11, 22, 33 |
| Traditionally read for | Temperament, first reactions, how others see you early on | Recurring themes over the years, the kind of work and lessons that keep returning |
| Can it change? | No | No |
When both numbers are the same, readers say the theme is doubled. When their grahas are not natural friends (see the next section), the usual reading is that you feel two different pulls, for instance a quick, talkative Mercury Mulank alongside a slow, patient Saturn Bhagyank. That is a description of a tension, not a problem to fix.
The graha linked to each number, and which numbers count as friendly
Each root number is linked with one of the nine grahas. In Indian practice, 4 goes to Rahu and 7 to Ketu; some Western books give those two numbers to Uranus and Neptune instead, which is one more reason readings from different sources differ.
To decide which numbers are friendly, Astroliya's tools use the natural friendship of the grahas from the same table its kundli engine uses, so a numerology result here never contradicts a chart reading. A number is always friendly to itself.
| Number | Graha | Themes traditionally linked | Counts as friends | Counts as unfriendly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun | Self-reliance, leadership, starting things | 1, 2, 3, 9 | 4, 6, 7, 8 |
| 2 | Moon | Care, sensitivity, moods shaped by surroundings | 1, 2, 5 | 4, 7 |
| 3 | Jupiter | Learning, teaching, advice, ethics | 1, 2, 3, 9 | 5, 6 |
| 4 | Rahu | Unconventional thinking, questioning rules, sudden turns | 4, 5, 6, 8 | 1, 2, 9 |
| 5 | Mercury | Speech, trade, quick learning, restlessness | 1, 4, 5, 6 | 2 |
| 6 | Venus | Comfort, beauty, relationships, the arts | 4, 5, 6, 8 | 1, 2 |
| 7 | Ketu | Inwardness, research, detachment | 6, 7, 8, 9 | 1, 2 |
| 8 | Saturn | Patience, discipline, slow but lasting results | 4, 5, 6, 8 | 1, 2, 9 |
| 9 | Mars | Energy, courage, protectiveness, a quick temper | 1, 2, 3, 9 | 5, 7 |
Numbers in neither column are neutral. Notice that the table is read from the row's side and is not always mutual: 5 counts 1 as a friend, while 1 counts 5 as neutral. When Astroliya's tools judge a number, such as a number plate's total, they read from that number's row against your Mulank and Bhagyank.
Folk numerology sometimes calls 4 and 8 unlucky. Classical astrology does not treat Rahu or Saturn as simply bad, and in this table both 4 and 8 have friends like any other number. Nothing in your Mulank or Bhagyank is a reason for fear.
Lucky number by date of birth: what it means in practice
When people search for a lucky number by date of birth, they are usually asking for their Mulank, sometimes their Bhagyank, and the numbers friendly to both. That is a convention of the tradition, not a calculation with a correct answer.
A worked illustration, using Example C (Mulank 5, Bhagyank 8). Go down the table and find the rows that count both 5 and 8 as friends. Rows 4, 6 and 8 do. Row 5 counts 5 as a friend (itself) but 8 only as neutral. So in this method, 4, 6 and 8 sit best with this person's two numbers, which also shows how a number folklore calls unlucky can come out friendly for one particular birth date.
Where people actually use this:
- Choosing between a few flat, phone or account numbers that would all suit them anyway.
- Comparing vehicle registration numbers; our guide to vehicle number numerology works through a plate letter by letter.
- Picking a date for something they control, alongside a proper muhurat rather than instead of one.
What it does not mean: no number brings money, protects health or prevents trouble. Don't pay a premium, delay a medical decision or turn down something good because of a digit. If a number feels right and costs you nothing, enjoy it; that's the spirit in which the tradition is best used.
Your personal year in 2027
The personal year is a third date number. It uses your birth day and month with the calendar year you're asking about, and it is always reduced to one digit, without master numbers. For 2027, the year's digits add to 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11.
- Example C, born 14 March: 1 + 4 + 3 + 11 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Personal year 1 in 2027.
- Example D, born 3 July: 3 + 7 + 11 = 21, then 2 + 1 = 3. Personal year 3 in 2027.
Numerologists read personal years as a nine-year cycle: 1 is traditionally linked with beginnings, the middle numbers with building and adjusting, and 9 with finishing and clearing out. In this method the personal year follows the calendar year, January to December; some numerologists start it on your birthday instead, so check which convention a reading uses.
Doing it automatically on Astroliya
Astroliya's numerology tool starts from a name: it counts every letter in the Chaldean, Pythagorean or Sepharial system and shows the Destiny, Soul urge and Personality numbers. It needs you to sign in. Add your birth date next to the name, or pick a person you have saved with their birth details, and it works as a Mulank calculator and Bhagyank calculator too: it adds your Mulank, life path (Bhagyank) and personal year, and writes out the working in the same form as above. For 14 March 1998 the line reads 1+4+0+3+1+9+9+8 = 35 → 3+5 = 8. The name systems change only the name numbers; your Mulank and Bhagyank are the same in all three.
Other tools that sit close to this one:
- The vehicle number tool needs no sign-in and compares a plate with your Mulank and life path.
- Rashi by name is a different idea altogether: it comes from Jyotish, not numerology, and takes a sign from the first syllable of your name.
- For a chart from your date, time and place of birth, read what an online kundli by date of birth gives you, then make one free on the kundli page.
You'll find every calculator in one place on the tools page. If you'd like your numbers talked through, an AI astrologer can explain the figures the app has calculated; treat that as guidance and reflection, not certainty.
Questions people ask
Is Bhagyank the same as the life path number?
Yes. In this method Bhagyank and life path are two names for one number: every digit of your full date of birth added up, with 11, 22 and 33 kept as master numbers. Some books also call it the destiny number, though others use "destiny" for a number taken from your name, so check which one a reading means.
Why does another site give me a different Mulank?
Your Mulank depends only on your birth day, so different answers almost always mean the date was entered differently, for example month first. A few sites keep 11 or 22 as a Mulank; here the Mulank is always reduced to a single digit, so the 11th gives 2 and the 22nd gives 4.
Can my Mulank or Bhagyank change?
No. Both come from your date of birth, which doesn't change. Changing the spelling of your name changes only the name numbers (Destiny, Soul urge and Personality), never these two.
Is numerology part of Vedic astrology?
Not strictly. Numerology uses the same nine grahas, but it works from your date and name, not from the sky at your birth, and classical Jyotish texts read the chart rather than these numbers. Many people use both side by side; just don't expect a numerology result to replace what a kundli shows.
Should I wear something or change my name for my number?
You don't need to. Some people traditionally choose colours, days or name spellings that match their number, and that's a personal, optional choice. No number or remedy replaces medical, legal or financial advice.
