Bhakoot Dosha: The 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 Moon-Sign Pairs, and When Tradition Softens Them

Half of all Moon-sign pairs score 0 of 7 in Bhakoot, so a Bhakoot dosha on a match report is common rather than rare. Whether tradition softens it turns on the lords of the two signs: every 5/9 pair has friendly or same lords, while only half of the 6/8 pairs do.

Bhakoot dosha is what a kundli match reports when the two Moon signs sit in one of three awkward positions from each other: 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8. In the Ashtakoota method of Guna Milan, the Bhakoot koota is worth 7 of the 36 points, and it is all or nothing. A pair either scores the full 7 or scores 0, and a 0 is what people mean by Bhakoot dosha (also spelt bhakut dosha).

Because the rule depends only on two Moon signs, it is easy to check by hand. It is also very common: half of all possible sign pairs score 0. Whether a 0 is softened is a separate check on the two signs' lords, which Astroliya's kundli matching tool runs for you; the worked example further down is one the tool's own tests confirm.

What Bhakoot dosha is in Guna Milan

Guna Milan compares the bride's and groom's Moon positions across eight kootas. Four come from the birth nakshatras and four from the Moon signs. Bhakoot is the largest of the sign-based four, and only Nadi, worth 8, carries more points overall. For the full 36-point method, see Guna Milan explained.

Astrologers traditionally link Bhakoot to family life, shared prosperity and how a couple grows together. It does not look at any planet other than the Moon, and it does not look at houses in either chart. It only asks one question: counting from one Moon sign to the other, how many signs apart are they?

How the count works

Count from the bride's Moon sign to the groom's, including the sign you start from. Then count back the other way. Unless the signs are the same, the two numbers always add up to 14, so every pair falls into one of seven relations:

RelationAlso calledBhakoot points
1/1 (same sign)7
2/12Dwirdwadash0
3/117
4/107
5/9Navpancham0
6/8Shadashtak0
7/7 (opposite signs)Samasaptak7

Three relations score 7 and three score 0. Seen from any one sign, that is six partner signs on each side, which is why the dosha turns up so often. If Moon signs were spread evenly, roughly one couple in two would see a 0 here.

Order does not change the result. A 2/12 pair is the same as 12/2: if her Moon is 2nd from his, his is 12th from hers. Our tool scores the pair the same either way round. Some astrologers read a difference by direction, but that is a refinement on top of the basic rule, not part of the 7-point count.

What each pair is traditionally associated with

Commentaries on matching attach a theme to each 0-scoring relation. These are traditional associations, not predictions about a couple:

  • 2/12: money, spending and the household's resources.
  • 5/9: children and the couple's outlook on family. Some astrologers point out that the 5th and 9th are trines, normally favourable positions in chart reading, and treat this pair more lightly than the other two.
  • 6/8 bhakoot: disagreements and wellbeing. Of the three, the 6/8 pair is the one commentaries usually describe as the most serious, which is why it is searched for on its own.

Which Moon-sign pairs have Bhakoot dosha: the lookup

Find your Moon sign in the first column. The six signs listed on that row are the partner Moon signs that score 0 for Bhakoot. Signs in bold are pairs where the Moon-sign lords are not friendly enough to soften the dosha under the rule explained in the next section; the rest are pairs tradition is said to soften.

Every sign not on your row scores the full 7: your own sign, the signs 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th from it, and the opposite sign. For the Graha Maitri score of every pair of sign lords, see the lord table in our guide to rashi compatibility for marriage.

Your Moon sign is the sidereal sign the Moon was in at birth, not your Western Sun sign. If you are not sure of it, a free kundli shows it on the first screen.

Bhakoot dosha cancellation: when tradition softens it

Classical matching texts do not treat a 0 in Bhakoot as the end of the discussion. The condition most often cited for Bhakoot dosha cancellation, or at least softening, is friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs. That is the same relationship the Graha Maitri koota scores out of 5.

Astroliya's matching tool applies it this way:

  1. It scores Bhakoot from the two Moon signs: 7, or 0 for a 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 pair.
  2. It finds the planet that rules each Moon sign: Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius.
  3. It scores Graha Maitri from the natural friendship of those two planets, counted both ways.
  4. If Bhakoot is 0 and Graha Maitri is 4 or 5, meaning the lords are the same planet, or at least one counts the other a friend and neither counts the other an enemy, the result's "Look closer" note says the lords are friendly, "which is traditionally said to soften it".
  5. If Graha Maitri is below 4, the note says astrologers often check whether the lords are friendly, and does not claim the dosha is softened.

Run that rule across all 36 sign pairs that score 0 and a clear pattern appears:

RelationPairsSoftened by friendly or same lordsNot softened
2/121275
5/912120
6/81266
All362511

Every 5/9 pair is softened, because signs in trine share an element and their lords are the same planet or friendly enough to score 4 or 5. The 6/8 pairs split evenly: Aries with Scorpio and Taurus with Libra have the same lord and score the full 5 in Graha Maitri, while Leo with Capricorn (Sun and Saturn) scores 0 there.

What softening does and doesn't mean:

  • It does mean the tradition offers a reason not to treat that 0 as a serious objection.
  • It does not change the number. Our tool leaves Bhakoot at 0 and the total as counted; some astrologers add the 7 points back once they consider the dosha cancelled, so totals from different sources can differ for this reason.
  • It does not cover the other cancellations some astrologers use, such as comparing the lords of the two Navamsa signs. Our tool checks sign-lord friendship only.
  • It says nothing about Nadi, Gana or Manglik status, which are checked separately.

A worked example: a 6/8 pair with friendly lords

This is a sample, not a real couple. The birth positions were chosen to show the rule, and the scores below are the ones the matching engine's unit test checks.

  • Bride: Moon in Magha nakshatra, Leo.
  • Groom: Moon in Revati nakshatra, Pisces.

Count from Leo to Pisces: Leo is 1, Virgo 2, Libra 3, Scorpio 4, Sagittarius 5, Capricorn 6, Aquarius 7, Pisces 8. Counting back from Pisces to Leo gives 6. This is a 6/8 bhakoot pair, so Bhakoot scores 0.

Leo is ruled by the Sun and Pisces by Jupiter. Each counts the other as a friend, so Graha Maitri scores the full 5. Under the rule above, tradition is said to soften this Bhakoot dosha.

Varna11
Vashya21
Tara33
Yoni42
Graha Maitri55
Gana61
Bhakoot70
Nadi80
Total3613

The example is useful precisely because the softened Bhakoot is not the whole story. Magha and Revati both fall in Antya Nadi, so Nadi also scores 0, and the total of 13 is below the 18 that tradition treats as the usual threshold. On this pair the tool's "Look closer" note mentions Nadi first, then says the Sun and Jupiter are friendly, which is traditionally said to soften the Bhakoot 0. An astrologer would weigh the Nadi dosha and its own exceptions, and then look at both full charts, before drawing any conclusion.

Bhakoot, Nadi and Gana: which weighs more

Bhakoot, Nadi and Gana are the three heaviest kootas. Together they carry 21 of the 36 points, so a 0 in any one of them moves the total a long way.

KootaPointsRead fromIs softening checked by our tool?

Bhakoot7Moon signsYes: Moon-sign lords friendly or the same
Gana6Birth nakshatrasYes: the same sign-lord rule as Bhakoot

Tradition generally gives Nadi the greatest weight, then Bhakoot. A match can carry Bhakoot dosha and still have a comfortable total, and a match with full Bhakoot can still fall short elsewhere. Read the total first, then the individual doshas. How many gunas should match explains how totals such as 18, 24 or 28 are usually read, and Manglik and non-Manglik marriage covers the separate Mars check.

Traditional remedies for Bhakoot dosha

When the dosha is not softened by the sign lords and a family still wants to proceed with care, these are the practices traditionally recommended. All of them are optional, and none of them changes a score.

  • Prayer to the Moon-sign lords: reciting the mantra of each partner's sign lord on that planet's weekday. Our guide to mantra japa rules covers counting on a mala.
  • Worship of Shiva and Parvati: many families keep a Monday observance as a couple, seen as an offering for harmony in marriage.
  • A shanti puja for the planets involved: performed by the family's own priest, usually before the wedding.
  • Charity: giving linked to the planets involved, such as food or clothing to those in need.

How to check Bhakoot for your own match

  1. Get both Moon signs from accurate birth details, using a free kundli for each person.
  2. Use the lookup above to see whether the pair is 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8.
  3. Run both charts through the kundli matching tool. It scores all eight kootas and its "Look closer" note tells you whether the sign lords soften a 0.
  4. For a deeper read that goes beyond the Moon, including the seventh house, Venus and timing, see the marriage compatibility report, or ask an AI astrologer to walk you through both kundlis in Hindi or English.

Questions people ask

Is 2/12 Bhakoot the same as 12/2?

Yes. If one Moon sign is 2nd from the other, the other is 12th from the first, so it is the same pair counted from opposite ends. Bhakoot scores 0 either way, and our tool does not distinguish the direction.

Is there Bhakoot dosha if both partners have the same Moon sign?

No. Same-sign pairs sit 1/1 and score the full 7. The shared lord also gives the full 5 in Graha Maitri. Same-sign couples are worth checking for Nadi dosha, though, because their nakshatras are often close together. If the Nadi matches but the birth stars differ, many astrologers treat that as an exception that cancels it.

Which is worse, 6/8 bhakoot or 2/12?

Traditional commentaries usually describe 6/8 as the most serious of the three relations and 5/9 as the mildest. In practice the sign lords matter more: half the 6/8 pairs have friendly or same lords, and every 5/9 pair does.

Does Bhakoot dosha cancellation add the 7 points back?

It depends on who is counting. Some astrologers restore the points once they consider the dosha cancelled; Astroliya's tool keeps the score as counted and adds a note that tradition softens it. Compare totals from different sources with that in mind.

Should we stop a marriage because of Bhakoot dosha?

Tradition does not ask that. Bhakoot is 7 points out of 36, it is softened for most sign pairs that score 0, and astrologers read it alongside the total, the other doshas and both full charts.
